About Asphalt Road Paving
There are many steps involved when paving roads, streets, and highways with asphalt. First, your experienced contractor will need to assess the area and project the wear and tear that the road will take. The number and type of vehicles will be considered, as well as the soil consistency and drainage options.
Your contractor will carefully plan the best way to execute the project, from preparing traffic control measures, to bringing in materials, to movement of the equipment. If needed, the project will be divided into the safest, most efficient, and the most convenient phases for you.
The next step in your roadway asphalt project is for the asphalt paving contractor to clear away all the trees, bushes, and any other plant life that obstructs the way. If it is an asphalt repair or reconstruction, debris or old pavement will be cleared away.
Preparing for proper water drainage is key the longevity of a road. Your contractor will use heavy equipment to shape the roadbed so it is slightly higher in the middle. Then the surface is smoothed and leveled.
The foundation is also important for drainage and will consist of a compacted subbase and base. The foundation also is very important in giving the pavement flexibility, support, and strength. Your experienced asphalt contractor will be able to know exactly what foundational materials will be needed for your road, street, or highway project.
When your subbase has been tested for proper grade and compaction, the binder layer is added. Followed by the first asphalt course. It is compacted, and another layer is added. The details of the project will determine the number of courses needed. Finally, the surface layer is added. Often contractors use smaller aggregate particles for the surface layer.

Asphalt Overlay
Asphalt overlay can be fast and inexpensive, however not all projects are advisable for overlays. When the damage is extensive with substantial alligator cracking or when the foundation is unstable, reconstruction is the wiser and more practical route.
If an overlay is a good option for your road, street, or highway, your asphalt paving contractor will need to first determine the cause of the damage to prevent further damage to the new overlay. Your contractor may need to take samples of the foundation to assess the condition.
The asphalt crew will thoroughly work to clean away and debris, sand, plant life, or gravel in preparation. Repairs may be needed. If there are deep cracks or ruts, they need to be filled so that the new surface will be smooth and level.
A bonding coat may be needed before the new paving is applied. Finally, the paving material is applied and compacted. Your overlay project is completed.
